WENDINGEN (COMPLETE SERIES)
A Journal for the Arts 1918-1932
Wendingen Magazine was published from 1918
to 1932 in a total of 116 issues.
With its first issue in January 1918 the magazine
set a new standard in arts publishing using a
revolutionary new typography. In its combina-
tion of rigourous thinking about the world of
contemporary arts and its design and produc-
tion, it surpassed all other journals of its time -
and those that followed.
Under the direction of architect Hendrikus
Theodorus Wijdeveld (1885-1987) Wendingen
(which translates roughly as “upheaval”)
sought out the newest ideas and most creative
artists in all branches of the visual arts, inclu-
ding architecture, graphics, sculpture, ceram-
ics, glass and theatrical design.
The innovative character of the magazine is best
expressed by the variety of bold lithograph co-
vers, each individually designed for the occa-
sion by artists such as El Lissitzky, R.N. Roland
Holst, Jan Sluijters. It featured the work of many
artists and architects: Gustav Klimt, Josef
Hoffmann, Michel de Klerk and Eileen Gray and
from 1925-1926 it published a series of seven issues of unparalled beauty
devoted to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Wendingen is a one of a kind magazine and a sought after collector’s item.
All issues are complete and include The El Lissitzky issue and the (often
missing) large folded enclosure by C.A. Lion Cachet in the issue: the
“Houtsnedenummer”.
This lot comprises two cases, each with 6 hand-made acid free boxes in
which each of the twelve series are separately and safely stored. These
boxes have been designed by the present owner in the style of Wendingen
and Frank Lloyd Wright. See image.
